My name is Laura Matson. I was born on April 11, 1991 in Oak Harbor, Washington. My parents are military so I have traveled all over the world and have met all sorts of people. Ever since I was little I've wanted to be a teacher. I love working with kids especially special needs ones. In the summer of 2010, I went to New York and worked at a camp for the developed mentally disabled. This was my first time ever working with special needs and it just reassured me that, that is definitely what I want to do with my life. So I am hoping that once I graduate I can become employed by the government and work as a DODDS teacher on military bases overseas. By doing that I would be able to teach and see the rest of the world.
Working with special needs individuals, I can see where the use of technology would come in handy. When I worked at the summer camp there were different levels of activities that campers could do. I worked with older and campers that were capable to maintain a job so I was able to have them keep a journal online and allow them to use the internet to browse. Aside from that I took several computer classes in high school and also the BTLE test last semester. I think technology is a great aspect to have in the classroom. It allows students to become more involved in knowing how their teacher makes a powerpoint or performs other types computer based projects. Teaching a child or young individual could be easy because they could follow you step by step as you show them through a projector. Not only will you be teaching them curriculum they need to know for an exam but they will also carry this information with them later on in life.
